I heard many things about ALES 204 before starting this course and am very glad that I walked in with an open mind.  TBH (To be honest) other than using Facebook and YouTube, I did not know very much, fully understand the implications, nor completely utilize social media.  When I first started this course I figured that I would add these social media applications because I had to, but now I think I may keep a few and continue to use and apply them.  I feel that this class has definitely accomplished it's goal in teaching us about social media.  There was so much that I did not know was possible.  In some ways I am still a bit old fashioned in that I still prefer face to face physical contact and interaction, however social media is about so much more than keeping in contact with friends.  From what I heard about how the old ALES 204 used to be, I believe this change is much more relevant to our increasingly technological society.  There are few classes that I actually look forward to going to every morning, and this class is one of them.  Everyday we would learn about a new form of social media, and have some interesting discussions.  We even learned how to make better resumes for applying to jobs.

I will definitely continue to use Facebook and YouTube on a daily basis, but thanks to ALES 204 I will use many more.  Initially believing that I would not keep twitter, I now see the benefits and will continue to check it on a daily basis.  I love looking at National Geographic's photo of the day, learning something new form the American Veterinary Medical Association, or just reading funny tweet from a good friend.  As my first degree comes to an in another year, I must begin thinking about jobs.  Linked In will become a valuable tool, however I don't think I would do a Facebook business profile when looking for a job.  I will also begin using stumble upon, and will probably continue to update this blog.  This has been a fun, and interactive semester and I have learned a lot.  In fact thanks to this course I will probably never send an improper email ever again.  The things we have accomplished have been great and the assignments thought provoking.  Social media is taking the world by storm.

Here is a link to a YouTube video about social media.

Here is a link to Jasmeena Gill's blog. http://jg-introductionsthisisme.blogspot.com/  She did something really interesting for her reflective post and added an audioboo message to sum up all she has learned.  I really enjoyed doing audioboo interviews in class and thought this was really creative to put on her blog posts.

Science Article Assignment

My science article assignment was on the American Journal of Veterinary Research.  I had never explored the shelves of 3rd floor of the Cameron library before being given this assignment.  The main journal that I have used in my studies, and that professors have referenced was actually the Journal of Animal Science.  Initially that was my choice, but I wanted to look at a journal that delved a little more into exactly what my interests are.  I explored many fascinating journals and textbooks related to animal research, veterinary medicine, and more.  Thanks to this assignment I will be a frequent visitor to this area of the library.

Until this point every single article I obtained for my studies has been off the internet.  Looking through all the old journals on the shelves of the library made me feel like I was looking through archives from the past.  Writing my paper really helped me realize how much our world changed in my short 20 years of existence.  Although back when the big old journals were written and internet wasn't available, these were one of the few forms of obtaining the latest information in research, I was very happy to see that journals still play a huge part in our learning today.  I believe that even with new methods of information transfer, journals will always be a trusted, and important institution of learning.

I would like to add a link to Emily Shand's blog as she talks about here science article assignment and brings up the interesting discussion of open access.  I totally agree with her and my favorite point was about how many more people could get the information that would otherwise never have the chance.

Wikipedia Entry

Hi guys! First off here is a link to my Wikipedia entry on Trypanosomosis or commonly known as Surra. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surra .  I chose this topic because I wanted to look at an infectious disease. Above is a picture of a horse affected by Surra and displaying many of the physical symptoms of the infection.  In Animal Science I have been learning about many infectious diseases, but wanted to choose one that is not very "sexy' and well known.  Although Trypaonosomosis is not a very big concern in North America, it is a serious problem in developing nations.  I hope by reading my Wikipedia article additions, people can become more aware of this disease and can better understand it.  We need better methods of detection.  I know  professors who are doing research on early disease detection where they are trying to detect illness up to a week before any clinical symptoms appear based solely by looking at behavior.  Since many times by the time symptoms appear it can already be too late, this I feel is very important to me.

It was quite interesting and to be honest, a bit frustrating, trying to update my wiki article and learning the codes.  At the end of the day however, I feel it was important for us to do this exercise because Wikipedia has helped everybody at some point or another in their life.  I have used it to just randomly search up info that has interested me, used it for essays, and as a resource to complete countless assignments.  It was only fair that we give back by contributing to unfinished stubs.  I know that I am nowhere near a top wiki entry status, but I still hope people can better learn and understand Surra disease by looking at my article.  The idea that anybody is allowed to add their input is both wonderful, but can also lead to false information being posted.  However, one can always use the references at the bottom of Wikipedia articles to determine if what they are reading is something they can trust.  Wikipedia should not be a main tool for research projects, but it can be a great tool for a quick answer to that question which has been driving you crazy!!

I wanted to add a link to Andrea Roman's blog she added to an interesting article on Trisomy 22.  I have taken some genetics classes before and so I did find it quite interesting.

My Facebook Business Profile Module 3

Facebook business profile.

My business profile highlights my past job experiences. As you can see from my pictures and my previous job choices, I love working with all types of animals.  I want to have experience with as many different types of animals as possible before applying to vet school.  Therefore I have also been volunteering at the valley zoo, and have just begun volunteering at Keno Hills horse rescue stables.  I have one cat so eventually I will have to upload a picture of her on here.

I have also indicated that sports are a large part of my interests.  I lead a very active lifestyle and am always down to play some football or go for a game of golf.  Along with sports I also love reading and hiking.  I hope I have been able to convey the message I wanted through my facebook business page, and that people will actually find me somewhat interesting.  This is a neat method of presenting oneself to future employers.  It is a new way that I never really considered before this class.  However, since many employers probably have facebook, this could prove to be very useful.

A little about Filly

Hi everyone welcome to my blog.  I can't believe I have a blog!  So my name is Filmon Tzeggai and I am in my 3rd year of Animal Science.  My ultimate goal is to become a veterinarian.  Social media will be so important in the veterinary profession.  Vets can stay updated on the latest outbreaks that go on all over the world through an email, facebook group, twitter post.... It is also a really good way to pass on interesting articles to collegues or ask questions that are also on the minds of many other people.  If the question is answered on a public forum such as twitter or a blog, then many people can be helped just by reading the posts.

So far I use facebook and email on a regular basis.  I am still new to twitter and haven't quite got the hang of it yet.  I have read a few blogs and they have been very helpful, whether I was just looking up something that peaked my interest, or I might have been looking online for some assistance with a question on my homework and have found occasional helpful answers through reading someones blog.  I know that anybody can write anything in a blog, and some of it may not be true.  However, either way it is interesting to read another person's point of view.
